Rumor: Johnny Depp Up For 'Dr Strange'
It looks like the Marvel Phase 3 news machine is ramping-up . . . or at least the rumor mill is! Hours ago we had official word about the casting of Michael Douglas in 'Ant-Man', Marvel's first Phase 3 film to launch after 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron'. Now we have a brand new rumor about the lead casting for Marvel's second Phase 3 film, 'Dr Strange'. Latino Review is reporting that, "A well-connected source informed me tonight that Johnny Depp has taken a meeting with Marvel to discuss taking on the role of Dr. Strange."
This rumor makes alot of sense on some level, and almost seems too obvious. Depp has been fan favorite casting to many for awhile, Disney has a sucessful relationship with him from 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'Alice in Wonderland', and Depp playing a mysterious mustachioed sorcerer doesn't seem like too much of a stretch.
What does seem a little odd about this rumor though is that Marvel is aiming for a Summer 2016 launch of 'Dr Strange', which also happens to be the launch window for the next installment in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise. This wouldn't be an impossible hurdle if Disney was strongly motivated enough since they own both properties, but it would take a huge commitment on Disney's part to work the logistics out juggling two huge production like that. But, if Disney is worried about losing their "A-lister" in their Marvel films with Robert Downey Jr possibly moving on; and they want to stay in the Johnny Depp business with another huge franchise after the box-office failure of 'The Lone Ranger', they may have all the motivation they need.
Personally, I won't be getting too worked about this rumor one way or the other, but it'll definitely be interesting to see how this story develops. Watch this space.
What do you guys think? Is Depp perfect casting or are you tired of his blockbuster "quirky" shtick? Is this a good idea for Disney/Marvel? Sound off in the comments below!
