First Trailer For HBO’S True Detective Starring Matthew McConaughy And Woody Harrelson

Matthew McConaughy has been absolutely on fire lately.  Over the past couple of years between Mudd, Killer Joe and unexpected smaller roles, it's like he has decided to give up on being a "movie star" to become the world's most handsome character-actor.  It looks like this interesting path will extend a little further on TV this winter, with the new HBO "limited series", True Detective.

The show is being described as an  “elevated serial narrative” where McConaughy and Woody Harrelson play two Louisiana Detectives who are drawn into a search for a serial killer when “The investigation of a bizarre murder in 1995 is framed and interlaced with testimony from the detectives in 2012, when the case has been reopened.”  The eight episodes of season one will tell a complete story, and if the show is successful and continues on each subsequent season would be a fresh narrative like American Horror Story.

True Detective is being written by Nic Pizzolatto a crime novelist who grew up in southwest Louisiana and whose only previous screen work was working on two episodes of The Killing.  Cary Fukunaga(Jane Eyre, Sin Nombre) will bring her distinctive visual style to the proceedings by directing all eight episodes.  If you want to get a better feel for the project though, check out the incredibly moody full length trailer HBO just released below:

This is a project I am really looking forward to.  The signature look that Fukunaga is bringing to this Southern Gothic styled crime story and it being written by a novelist who grew up in the area would be enough on their own to get me interested.  Add on top of that the intriguing format and the always reliable Woody Harrelson and this becomes must see.  With the show also starring McConaughy whose career is now showing more promise than it has since his A Time To Kill days, the premiere date in January just can't get here soon enough!

So, what do you guys think?  Does this trailer get you excited?  Do you feel McConaughy is changing his career for the better?  Do you think the anthology format is a good or bad thing for Television?  Let your voices be heard by leaving your comments below!
