AMC Announces New 'The Walking Dead' Companion Series!AMC has just announced the development of a brand new "companion" series that will spin-off of their hugely popular show The Walking Dead. It looks like AMC is trying to really hold onto their audience as this news comes hot on the heals of last week's announcement of a Breaking Bad spin-off entitled Better Call Saul. The show is still in it's very early stages of development with a targeted air date of 2015, and will be executive produced by Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert for AMC. In his announcement AMC President Charlie Collier revealed a few details about the direction of the show.
“... An entirely new story and cast of characters . . . It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse,”
With Breaking Bad and Mad Men ending soon it certainly makes sense to try and double down on their most popular show moving forward, and Collier essentially said as much.
“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,”
Even though the show has always been it's own animal, it has always followed the comic series as a sort of road-map. Other than Telltale Games' The Walking Dead videogame, this will be the first time that another corner of this universe is explored, and Robert Kirkman seems excited about the idea.
“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”
I for one am thrilled by this announcement. Even though the show has seen it's ups and downs it has remained consistently engaging TV, and to now be able to discover something brand new, even to comic readers, sounds like a real treat. My favorite version of The Walking Dead so far is Telltale Games' take, and if that is any indication of the kind of characters and stories that are possible outside of Rick and his group, we could be getting something very special.
Like anything though it will will come down to execution. Let's just hope that when Season 4 debuts on October 13 all the behind the scenes shenanigans don't look like they have taken their toll and the show lives up to it's great potential.
I want to know what you guys think. Are you excited about a spin-off show? What would you like to see explored? Are you getting Walking Dead fatigue? Sound off below!
