Rumors are swirling at /film that Zac Efron (17 Again, Me and Orson Welles) has been offered the lead role of Tetsuo in the Hughes Brothers (Book of Eli, Menace II Society) upcoming live action adaptation of Akira. While Akira was the first anime I ever saw(never read the manga), it isn't a sacred cow for me as it is for so many others. I know some find it blasphemous that a Hollywood live action film is even being made, let alone these rumors that the star of High School Musical may be the lead (although I don't know how anyone can not be pumped at the possibility of more Hughes Brothers sci-fi goodness). The rumored casting of Efron just isn't a problem for me. In fact, I think it could be a positive. Zac Efron is a much stronger actor than he is often given credit for and is usually the best thing in some admittedly bad films. So even though this is just a rumor at this point, how do you guys feel? Is this inspired casting, or does it just go to show why the movie shouldn't be made in the first place?
