James Cameron takes us back to Pandora!

Twentieth Century Fox announced via press release that Avatar 2 and 3 will officially be James Cameron’s next two films.  It looks like Preproduction will start early next year with anticipated release dates of 2014 and 2015. There had been some speculation that Cameron would make a film or two (Cleopatra with Angelina Jolie) in between, but that will not be the case.
I know that there has been a lot of backlash on the internet about just how good Avatar actually is, but I couldn’t be happier.  I absolutely loved Avatar and its world of Pandora.  I can’t wait to return for a second and third trip.  I just can’t understand the Avatar hate.  I understand it has similarities to a lot of films, but I think that speaks to its classic structure rather than lack of imagination.  People say that the film ripped off everything from Dances with Wolves, Ferngully, Medicine Man, Tarzan and more.  How is this any different than what George Lucas did thirty years ago with Star Wars?  Are you going to tell me that Star Wars in no way resembles Arthurian legend?  Why does Lucas get a pass for name checking Joseph Campbell while Cameron is accused of being a hack?  This entire backlash strikes me as hipster navel gazing, no one wants to think anything is fun or cool anymore.
I don’t care how many times you’ve seen Dances with Wolves, you’ve never seen 12 foot tall cat men run around in a beautifully realized eco-system.  Werner Herzog has said that he believes western civilization is starved for new images and that it is his solemn duty to give the world things it has never seen before.  Avatar gave me images I have never seen before and I couldn’t be more thankful for the journey.  Sign me up now because I can’t wait to see what Cameron has in store for us next.  It’s not every day we get a world class director with a huge budget creating an “epic work of fantasy”.  Great movies are still being made today, sometimes we just need to block out the noise and allow ourselves to enjoy them.  So are you guys as excited as I am to return to Pandora?
